I waved Lizzie off this morning as she and her classmates took off in a coach to deepest darkest Wales for a week.
Quite honestly, I think Year 5 is a bit too young to be gallivanting around the countryside and if it were up to me they'd have to be at least 18 before they could spend a night away from home. Still, she seemed quite excited at the prospect.
We've spent about four days packing. Not only did she need all the gear that a girl needs for this kind of thing, but the school asked if they could take a 'Tudor' outfit as well for an authentic visit to a castle! Who thinks these things up?? As if it's not stressful enough, they then ask us to turn into Jane Asher type figures and whip up a historical costume or two.
Actually it wasn't too bad as the school had a Victorian Day the other week (they have a liking for this kind of thing) and with my history pre the 1960s being a bit hazy I decided that the Victorian costume would do very nicely thank you as a Tudor costume. Perfect!
I'm sure no one will see the join.
Hmmm, it will be a long week. I expect she'll have a good time. Chews on nails nervously.

She'll have a great time, Maddie, and be all the more pleased to see you on her return.
I look forward to the peace I get when TD is away and then worry incessantly the whole time.
She will be having a blast!
I used to absolutely dread the costume making requests from school. My worst one was a Victorian outfit I cobbled together from an old skirt of mine and a school shirt - sadly it didn't fit properly and my poor daughter spent the entire play holding it up (mortified).
Oh I feel for you, although she'll probably have a fantastic time.
I remember when S need to dress up for a Victorian outing and I dressed her in black with a balaclava and mae her go as a hangman. She loved it (thankfully).
Doesn't everyone have a Tudor costume just lying around the house?
Ah the Year 5 Tudor costume. I have until the end of June to come up with one before the big trip to Tudor Land or wherever it is they're going:-(
Hope your littlie is having a good time. And good weather!:-)
Yes, I'm with you on the costumes. If men were asked for these things they'd just say no. It's all about making women feel inadequate. Actually you don't need to be able to make a costume to be a good Mum .... but schools still seem to put you to the test!
Alice
My Year 5 went away for 4 nights in February - yes it does seem a long time.
First week of August, both him and Year 8 brother will be away for a full 7-night week scout camp. How will I cope?
(Think the pub, restaurants and grown-up movies will beckon. Make hay while the kids are away.)
Thanks everyone for the sympathetic and supportive comments! She's back having had a wow of a time and proudly announced she didn't cry at all! Yay. I wish we could do it all again with me enjoying the break. Next time!
I sympathise totally with the 'outfit for Victorian/medieveal/egyptian/any day that would be cool to dress up day' thing. My son challenged me for Book Week before half term when he asked to go as Captain Teggs Stegosaur from the Astrosaurs series (he is 6). So I was up stapling and painting spines to a t shirt the night before (writing not dress making is my gifting I feel!!!!!). Really enjoying your blog.
Welcome Mickmouse!
The dinosaur outfit sounds very creative, the things we do as parents!
