The Rhodedendron bush is looking mighty pretty.
The creature encroaching from above is this:-
An Aracucaria Araucana, more commonly known as a Monkey Puzzle Tree. So called, apparently, because it would puzzle a monkey to climb one!
It's a monster of a tree at about 60ft tall.
When we were looking to move a few years ago we viewed loads of houses but couldn't find the 'right one.' At the end of a day viewing and discounting a number of properties we drove past a house that had a small and perfectly formed monkey puzzle tree in the front garden. I said to George, 'Oh, find me a house with a monkey puzzle tree and that will be the one!' I can't think what possessed me to make that comment.
A few days later we received details on a property that George immediately said he wasn't interested in. The agent persuaded us to go and have a look as he said the front didn't really do the house justice. As soon as we walked in we both really liked the feel of the house and when we went to look in the back garden, George turned to me and said, 'there you go, there's your monkey puzzle tree!'
Spooky eh?

I love Monkey Puzzle trees. My parents used to have one in their front garden and changed the house's name to "The Monkey Puzzle" (it used to raise an eyebrow at the local Post Office when I'd post a package to them!). Unfortunately the tree died a few years ago and had to be chopped down. I tried to convince my parents they should change the name of the house to "The Monkey Puzzle Stump" but they weren't having any of it!
I love Monkey Puzzle trees too and used to drive J around to find them to get him to sleep when he was small. I think there were about three near where we lived.
Lucky you having one, it looks a fabulous specimen and apparently they only grow about 1cm a year or something.
Very! But sometimes you do just get that feeling about a house, don't you?
I love those trees too. Puts my stumpy little willow to shame!
Cal - Great name for a house, shame the tree died! I just can't understand why your parents didn't go for the new name, though!
Debs - Kids love them, don't they? I remember one of Kit's friends coming round and saying, 'wow, that looks pre-historic!'
Helen - They say houses are sold within the first 30 seconds of a viewing and I can believe that!
Tam - But willows are lovely too!
That is spooky. I'd love a garden at the moment, the weather is so gorgeous.
Ah, so that's where all the good weather went, it's over your way! Dull and grey and a wee bit nippy here.
